“The Last Interview.” Photo Credit: Mondays with Merce.

I can’t remember when I fell in love with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. It wasn’t immediate, I know that. As Robert Swinston says, the first few times, “I really couldn’t grasp it all.”

And now the company—the work—is slipping so quickly through our grasp. The Legacy Tour is entering its final month (it will have, by the time you read this), rushing toward the final performance on New Year’s Eve. In with the new. Out with the old. Always with art.

It is my honor to dedicate the December/January dance pages to Merce Cunningham, and the many fine individuals who have helped him, in his lifetime and after, to make his art what it is.

Yours,
clr
