The Matriarchs Rhapsody
The Matriarch’s Rhapsody is a codex of language, abstraction, symbols, and objects outsourced from my photo archives, my mother’s drawings, and miscellaneous databases. I’ve forged this surrealist game as a way to develop narratives and content from the unconscious. I guess this is a way for me to navigate my childhood method of making images and ideas. When I was a child, I had a very limited toy box full of broken toys and household appliances. I’d build an elaborate stage throughout my South Carolina home, and launch a grand, fantastical 10-hour opera with my G.I. Joes and Barbies. Simultaneously, my mother was drawing inventive diagrams of hybrid objects. Our therapeutic and escapist creative practices developed on parallel inclines over the decades and have finally merged. My mother has created a body of countless drawings over the years, and I archived a selection of them. I traced them and constructed them in 3D animation as a way to manifest my adult toy box full of complicated hybrid objects. My body and digitally rigged bodies are the surrogates for the G.I. Joes and Barbies, and I’m pursuing the same opera at the present moment. This artistic system manifests in photographs, wallpaper, graphite drawing installations, 3D animated videos, live performances, and sculpture.
