MATA YOUTH, 2014 EDITION

Editor’s Note: In 1996, Philip Glass, Eleonor Sandresky, and Lisa Bielawa founded MATA—Music at the Academy—a non-profit that “commissions, presents, and supports the music of a wide variety of young composers from around the globe.” MATA’s main event is a spring festival of music by composers under the age of 40, assembled by putting out a call for scores (and, a rarity, not asking for submission fees) and choosing what the organizers think are the best works. MATA Festival 2014 was the biggest yet, a week of events centered around six straight days of concerts at the Kitchen (April 14th – 21st). The Rail brings you exclusive coverage of all the concerts.
